Data-driven control of placement nozzles in SMT manufacturing

Even minor deviations can directly affect process stability and assembly quality in SMT manufacturing, as placement nozzles are the only physical interface with the component. Their condition is therefore a critical factor in the placement process. Conventional approaches such as interval-based maintenance or isolated data collection often do not provide continuous transparency into the actual condition of individual nozzles, meaning deviations are frequently detected only after they have already affected production.

Closed-Loop in Nozzle Management

Closed-Loop Nozzle Management connects identification, data collection, maintenance, cleaning, and control in a continuous loop. During placement, condition and process data are captured and transferred to Factory Equipment Center, where they are consolidated in individual data records and maintained throughout the lifecycle. Based on this, the use of each individual nozzle in production is controlled in a targeted manner.

The closed loop can be structured into five key steps.

  • Unplanned downtime is reduced as deviations in condition are detected early and faulty nozzles are removed from the production process.
  • Consistent placement quality is ensured as only nozzles meeting defined quality and performance requirements are used.
  • Maintenance and replacement can be planned based on condition and usage data.
